Saori Q1 Wall/Ceiling Lamp by Kazuhide Takahama

Designed by Kazuhide Takahama in 1973, the Saori Q1 sits between lighting and sculpture. White stretch fabric is drawn over a metal framework, forming a square surface lifted by a curved diagonal support. When illuminated, the fabric diffuses the light into a soft, even glow, revealing the contours of its construction.

Inspired by traditional Eastern lanterns, Takahama replaced rice paper with fabric to explore a different quality of light. Saori belongs to a series of lamps named after members of his family, bringing a personal dimension to its restrained, architectural form.

An architect and designer trained in Japan, Takahama developed much of his career in Italy following his meeting with Dino Gavina at the Milan Triennale in 1957. Saori reflects the meeting of these design cultures through its precise geometry and sensitive use of material.
